10 Things to Do In and Around Ullapool: Our Guide to This Highland Gem
Welcome to Ullapool, our home and a place we absolutely love living in! Nestled on the rugged northwest coast of Scotland, this charming fishing village offers a blend of breathtaking landscapes, friendly locals, and a deep sense of community. We may be a bit biased, but we truly think Ullapool is one of the most beautiful places in the Scottish Highlands. Whether you’re an adventurer or someone just looking to unwind, there’s so much to explore and enjoy here. From stunning hikes to local eats, here are our top 10 recommendations for things to do in and around Ullapool.
1. Stroll Along Ullapool Harbour
Start your visit with a relaxed wander around Ullapool Harbour. Whether it’s watching the fishing boats come in with the day's catch or seeing the ferries heading off to the Outer Hebrides, there's always something to see. It’s the perfect spot for a slow stroll. We love grabbing a coffee, sitting on a bench, and just soaking in the view.
Our Tip: Keep an eye on wildlife, you never know when seals or dolphins come for a visit.
2. Hike Up Ullapool Hill
If you're up for a bit of exercise with a view that’s absolutely worth it, hike up Ullapool Hill. It's not a long walk, but it can be a bit steep, so be ready for a leg workout! Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Ullapool, Loch Broom, and even the Summer Isles. It’s one of those “wow” moments that makes you fall in love with the Highlands all over again. Sunsets are incredible up there.
Our tip: Bring a light jacket, it can get windy up there!
3. Explore Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve
About 20 minutes from Ullapool, Knockan Crag is a geologist's dream, but even if rocks aren’t your thing, the dramatic scenery here will blow you away. The trails are well-marked, and the views across the Highlands are something special. Plus, it’s a great place to learn about the ancient history of the area and how these epic landscapes were formed millions of years ago.
Our tip: Even if the weather looks good, pack something windproof—the breeze can be strong!
4. Go Dolphin and Whale Watching
If you love wildlife as much as we do, then you can’t miss a dolphin and whale-watching boat tour. We recommend Shearwater Cruises or Sea Scape. These trips take you out into the waters around the Summer Isles, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot dolphins, minke whales, and maybe even humpback whales. It’s one of those experiences that never gets old, no matter how many times you do it. Every trip is a bit different, depending on what the wildlife is up to that day!
Our tip: Book your trip early as tickets sell out quickly during summer months.
5. Corrieshalloch Gorge
Corrieshalloch Gorge is just a short drive from Ullapool, and it’s one of those places that makes your jaw drop when you see it. The gorge is deep, dramatic, and comes with a stunning waterfall, the Falls of Measach. There’s a suspension bridge you can walk across, which gives you a thrilling (but totally safe!) view straight down into the gorge. It’s a quick stop, but the natural beauty here is off the charts.
Our tip: The paths are short and easy, so it’s a great stop if you’re traveling with kids.
6. Take a Walk in Lael Forest Garden
Need a little peace and quiet? Just head to Lael Forest Garden, which is about 15 minutes outside Ullapool. The forest was planted in the 19th century, so you’ll find a mix of towering trees from all over the world. Fascinating mix of around 200 species. Remarkable trees here include, Giant Sequoia, which can live for over 3000 years. It’s an easy, calming walk and perfect if you’re in the mood to be surrounded by nature. We love coming here when we want to slow down and escape for a while.
Our tip: Visit in autumn if you can—the fall colours are incredible.
7. Sample Fresh Seafood at The Seafood Shack
You can’t come to Ullapool and not try the seafood! Our top pick is The Seafood Shack, where everything is fresh, local, and ridiculously good. Whether you go for the fish soup, mackerel pate, or our favourite—the haddock wraps—you won’t be disappointed. It’s a simple setup, but that’s part of the charm. Just great food in a no-fuss, relaxed spot. You can also grap Gin and Tonic from the Rhidorroch Distillery pop up stand.
Our tip: Get there early or be prepared to wait—it’s popular, and for good reason!
8. Book a Kayak Trip
For something a bit more adventurous, book a sea kayaking trip with Kayak Summer Isles. Paddling around the Summer Isles is such a peaceful way to experience the stunning coastal landscape. You might even get lucky and spot seals or dolphins! Don’t worry if you’re a beginner—tours cater to all skill levels.
Our tip: Dress in layers and bring sunscreen!
9. Enjoy the Best Coffee at Cult Café
Let’s be honest—sometimes you just need a great cup of coffee, and Cult Café is the place to get it. The atmosphere in this New Zealand-inspired cafe is laid-back and the coffee is top-notch. Not to mention their amazing brunches and cakes.
Our tip: If you want to eat, order the Salmon Hashcakes!
10. Visit Rhue Lighthouse
A short drive north of Ullapool brings you to Rhue Lighthouse, a peaceful and picturesque spot with stunning coastal views. It’s a great place to go for a quiet walk, enjoy the scenery, or even have a little picnic. On a clear day, you can see across Loch Broom to the Summer Isles. It’s one of those places that feels like a hidden gem, even though it’s just minutes from the village.
Our tip: Head there in the evening for a peaceful sunset—you won’t regret it!
Ullapool has so much to offer, whether you're here for a weekend or planning a longer stay. We hope you’ll fall in love with Ullapool just like we have. So, pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable Highland experience!
